Sometimes pursuing your goals can be exhausting. I had spent hours planning a photoshoot for my new product, only to be let down by the colors of my labels, the lighting, and the sunlight. I was disappointed and got very emotional. I also spent over 18 hours looking for a Web developer to design a new web application for my start-up business, and it has been overwhelming combing through hundreds of messages, jumping on one Skype call and another.
Building a dream can be time-consuming the journey of getting to the point where you can show off what you’ve been building, can feel like hell. Most times we forget that the journey is part of the dream. It is all-encompassing, its the full package.

Dreams are sometimes like that, they are never as expected. We plan things out perfectly in our heads but reality gives us a check and we must adjust accordingly. There are several ways to combat the funk that comes up when things don’t work out as planned.

#1: Let it flow. Sometimes what we focus so much on perfecting isn’t always necessary. In the case of my photoshoot, I focused on the positives, adjusted a few things and went along with the process.

#2: Don’t get funky: it’s easy to get upset, discouraged, and downright funky because you didn’t have your way. You have to keep one thing in mind (nothing good comes easy). Always remember that when next you hit a block on your way to greatness. In my case, I focused only on the positive and put a spin on the photoshoot.

#3: Step back: One way to not flat line and kill your dream, is to step back and re-access; ideas can come at us with grandeur and our budget, skills, and resource can’t make it out the way we see it in our heads. It’s okay to step back and find another angle to accomplish your goals without losing your mind.

The truth is your dreams have a life of their own. They may not always take the intended course but be rest assured that they will come true.

If you are considering striking out and starting a new business, you have probably been investigating what is known as “business opportunities”. A business opportunity is usually a complete package that contains a product or line of products, and a marketing strategy for selling that product. Any business opportunity worth considering will either have a track record that you can investigate and evaluate, or it will have a clear statement of the plan, the potential, and the up-front costs. Before investing any time or money in a specific business opportunity there are some things you should consider. Here are some of the more important ones:

How long has the business opportunity been around? – Before investing time and money in marketing a business opportunity it is important to determine how long that business has been operating, the success rate, customer base, etc. If it is a new concept that has not been proven in the marketplace, you have no assurance that it will even work.

Does the company have a fixed address and phone number? – This may seem obvious to you, but the fact is, thousands of “companies” operate with nothing more than a website and an email address. Many of them are here today and gone tomorrow. Make sure the business you intend to deal with has a fixed address, physical location, and established phone number.

Does the business opportunity have some successful members you can talk to? – Most business opportunities will show you “testimonials”, but these are often untrustworthy. They could even be completely fabricated. Ask the owner of the business opportunity for the names of real people you can talk to. Call them on the telephone and ask them to share their experiences with the program. This will not only provide you with valuable first-hand information about the program, but it will give you a list of advisors who may be happy to help you along the way.

How much initial investment is required? – In many cases, a proven business opportunity with a successful track record will involve some kind of initial investment. This could involve an initial amount of product inventory, a program subscription fee, or possibly a piece of equipment required to produce or finish the product. You should not assume that a business opportunity that is free to join is a better investment. Usually, a free-to-join business opportunity will involve other costs such as marketing and advertising fees. Nobody gives away “opportunities” for free. What you have to determine is whether a specific business opportunity has a successful track record, is managed by honest people, and offers you a realistic chance of actually making some money. These are the things you must weigh against the entry costs.

What is the realistic income potential of the business? – Have a careful look at the numbers and projections provided by the business opportunity. Then talk with actual members who are using the program to determine if they have been able to turn those numbers into reality.

Are there extra fees such as yearly or monthly subscription fees, shipping costs, or minimum purchase requirements? – Make sure to get a detailed list of all the fees involved in operating the new business. These things may not seem significant now, but they can easily eat into your profits later.

Who controls the money? – When you generate sales for the business opportunity what assurance do you have that you will get your share of the profits? This is the primary reason not to deal with “fly by night” outfits that have no track record. Again, the best way to get an accurate reading on this is to talk with people already using the program.

Does the business opportunity provide marketing materials and person-to-person mentoring? – One of the most difficult parts of starting a new business is “learning the ropes”. It can be extremely helpful to have advisors who have first-hand experience in making the program work. The same goes for marketing materials. You will have enough to do without having to create brochures, ads, and newsletters for your new business.

How much control of your new business will you have? – Be clear on who owns the business, and who controls the way it is developed and marketed. You may want to diversify your product offerings in order to avoid being at the mercy of “head office”. Remember that you are trying to create a business that has long term value. This will involve considerable investment of time and energy on your part. You don’t want your business to be completely dependent on the stability and integrity of a single supplier.

The ideal business opportunity is one that is offered by a stable company with a proven track record. The business opportunity should require low initial investment and have high-profit potential both in the short term and in the long term. It should allow you to build a profitable business of your own that will be a source of income far into the future.

When Melissa quit her job to start her real estate business she knew she wanted more out of life and to live it to the fullest under her terms. There were days of doubts and the lack of support sometimes heightened those feelings; however, she pushed her way through, as a woman in a dogged male-dominated industry. Designed life caught up with Melissa to learn more about her entrepreneurial journey and hear her thoughts about life.

What or Who inspired you to start your business?
I always hated working full time and this is what inspired me to start my own business. After changing jobs multiple times, hoping that with each time, having an increase in pay or being with a different team would make me happy; for some reason I always hated it. I would say to myself ‘surely there’s more to life than being on this constant hamster wheel’. I had no idea where to start, or even how, but in hindsight, everything just fell into place.
I was also inspired by the fact that I was in control – I didn’t have to travel into an office to prove that I was worthy, or have a certain job title, or be stuck when my pay wouldn’t always last the full month and I would have to do a countdown until the next payday.

What habits helped make you successful?
I would love to say that I have a series of daily habits that have ensured my success, but I don’t fully feel that I’m at that point yet. I have just worked hard and tried to think creatively. I want to get to a point where I have a dedicated daily routine but I’m a work in progress. At the moment, I find that I have to naturally get ‘into the flow’. When I try to force working in my business, I find that I procrastinate on tasks that aren’t important, but when I get ‘into the flow’, I do all the tasks I know I should be doing, with ease. I do believe that routine is key, so if I was following my own advice – I would get up at the same time every day, go to the gym at the same time, and schedule certain tasks around what I like doing throughout the day (for example: with my business being based around property, I can end up spending a lot of time on the phone! So I’m currently working on managing that so I can get to see more properties and meet more people, etc).

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
How I distinguish myself from my competitors is that I understand that I’m in my lane, on my own path and it’s my daily dedication and hard work that will make a difference. I also find building relationships fairly easy, so I don’t view my competitors as something to worry about. I think about supermarkets – they each sell the same or similar products, for variable prices, yet people still have their preferred ‘go-to’ supermarket. So I bear in mind that I’m attracting ‘my type of customer’.

What was your biggest mistake?

My biggest mistake when I first started, was not having a pipeline of sales. I was close to completing my first 2 sales and for some reason, I stopped chasing business. I let my pipeline go cold and it was much harder to build the pipeline back up. But it was a worthwhile learning experience, which allowed me to prove to myself how determined I am to make my business successful. That was the point I could have given up…but I didn’t.

What was unexpected when you started your business?
The main thing that was unexpected when I started my business, was just how lonely the process was. I felt that friends and family didn’t fully understand why I would choose to put myself through the stress and aggravation of owning my own business. I also wonder why I do it myself sometimes, but that’s all part of the process.

What did you learn?
From this, I learned that fellow entrepreneurs are your biggest supporters. The people who like and comment on my social media posts are people who I’ve met and connected with along the way. I also learned that everyone sees you. For the moments that I get zero likes and comments on posts, I don’t let it affect me as it doesn’t mean that my posts haven’t been seen.

How can you minimize the unknowns?
There are lots of unknowns with being an entrepreneur but the way you can minimize the unknowns is DO IT ANYWAY! If you follow a certain marketing plan or you make a decision on doing something, you don’t know how it will be received and you know what? It doesn’t matter. You don’t know until you do know, and the only way you will know is by doing.

What does it mean to live a Designed Life?
To live a designed life is to have the flexibility and freedom to control your destiny. It’s about you carving your future and creating the type of life that you want to lead.

What impact do you want to have on the world or change you’d like to see?
The impact that I would like to have on the world, is by proving that you don’t need to fit into a stereotype to be an entrepreneur. I show up every day as my true authentic self and I’m always a work in progress. I have sometimes wondered if I would be more successful if I wore higher heels to networking events, but I refuse to give in. It’s hard enough walking into a room full of strangers, much less thinking about your feet being on fire in gorgeous shoes.

Describe yourself in one word?

What mantra do you live by?
Everything happens for a reason, but you can’t sit down and wait for things to slot into place. You have to work hard at making things happen and then from there, things will either slide into or out of place.

Where does your passion come from?
My passion comes from wanting to be happy and wanting to carve a life that I have created by myself, for myself (And a family one day).

What makes you smile?
Caring people make me smile. You can’t beat a genuinely nice, honest and friendly person.

I love what I do! I feel that my business is fully aligned with my personality. Helping people and coming up with solutions to problems makes me feel good and that’s what fuels me to keep going. My business is about finding properties for investors, so I get to help sellers who have homes that need modernization and are ready to sell; and I also get to help Investors find the right properties, which meets their requirements.

How do you develop Key partnerships?

Best partnerships are created with intention and sincere communication with clarity on what each partner contributes and clear agreements of what’s expected and to be delivered.

How did you get funded or what creative strategies did you use to execute on minimal cash flow?

Aligning with others that get my message and what I do, and how I serve. I also used collaborative, mutually benefiting joint ventures and strategic partnerships. Another way I funded my business was through speaking engagements, classes, and workshops.

What habits helped make you successful?

Focus, and masterminding with like-minded professionals. Investing in myself, my businesses and coaching.

Believing that I had to be perfect. There’s no such thing as perfection.

Trusting the Universe/ God is in charge. Some risks cannot be pre-calculated.

What advice would you give inspiring entrepreneurs?

Kehinde Daramola is a Licensed Architect from Nigeria with a Masters Degree in Architecture from Covenant University. Since her graduation, she has worked in different capacity and on different projects  including residential, commercial, and industrial projects with few architectural firms. As a single mom of two amazing sons, she focuses on making sure she provides the best for them, “nothing matters to me more than their well-being and for them to get the best that I can offer”, she exclaimed. After the loss of her husband in 2015, she had to wake up to the challenge life had thrown at her; “I realized that my 9-5 job couldn’t do so much in meeting up with our daily expenses”, she said.
In 2018 she decided to quit her job to start a firm where she focuses on furniture making, interior design, and construction; she was inspired to start her business so she can be more financially independent, grow her network, and also grow her net worth.

As an Architect, she works strictly in ensuring that her clients’ job are delivered to specification, on budget and  in time. “Before I went into business I had always felt I needed a good capital for me to start but I realized that not all businesses require money, so I learned a skill in furniture making then started my business on Zero capital, my first job funded itself and my business has been thriving ever since”.
On interviewing Kehinde, she shared some nuggets on what inspired her to start her firm, how she started her business, and what she considers success to be.
What habits helped make you successful?
I would not say I have attained success yet because I’m on a journey to unending learning and growth; what I have learned so far is that I must be consistent, persistent and be open to learning new things, always.
How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I have an edge over my competitors because as an architect I have a background in space planning, design, and specifications which gives my clients the type of satisfaction we’d always wanted from them.
What was your biggest mistake?
My biggest mistake is not knowing so much about the business side of my skill since I had no prior knowledge on how to run a  business so, I struggle with documenting how my business should be run.
How do you deal with failure and how do you learn from failures?
Every failure is an opportunity for growth and an opportunity to re-strategize; that is how I have handled it so far.
How can you minimize the unknowns?
Life in itself is unknown, the only thing I think we can minimize the unknown is to live ready and take more risks.
What advice would you give inspiring entrepreneurs?
My advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is that Just Start where you are, start growing and learn as you earn.
What does it mean to live a Designed Life?
For me living a Designed Life is living a purposeful life actualized by living your dreams and fulfilling your visions.
What impact do you want to have on the world or change you’d like to see?

What or who inspired you to start your business

Since I was a teenager, I always knew I wanted to have my own business. I can’t pinpoint what it was, but I just knew. My plan was to go to university, get a good job and have a successful career until 35, and then start my businesses. I think I had this notion that you had to have qualifications and a good career before you ventured into business. We all know that is not true though, but that is what I thought at 15. However, despite my immaculately well laid out plan, things didn’t work out that way anyway! After losing my job at the end of 2018 (I was 32), I thought why am I waiting until 35? Do it now!

Whilst I always knew my business would be about helping people, it wasn’t until 2016 that I knew what my main business would be.. I went to a two-day coaching introduction course and instantly things clicked – this was it! A business where I would help people, and it turned out I was naturally really good at coaching. Since then I have continued my training  and in 2019, I set up my own coaching business.

I will explain later where the passion for helping others came from, but essentially is was because of my past battles and experiences.

What habits help make you successful

Habits make success! I truly believe it doesn’t matter on your background, education, bank loan or how motivated you are, what success boils down to is simple habits. Whether your goal is to be more productive, get healthy or start a business, it all boils down to your daily habits! Small simple things you do that seem inconsequential at the time, but they are either going to take you one step closer or one step further away from your desires.

My success habits personally are:

  • Forward planning and diarising my to-do tasks otherwise they never get done. You have to block out time to get stuff done!
  • Making my health and fitness a priority. Without that, you can’t be successful – you won’t have the energy! I make sure I exercise 4 times a week, don’t eat processed ready meals and meditate every day.
  • Constantly looking for the learning in whatever I do. That way, whether it goes right or wrong, I know I am learning from it. This helps me progress and detach from any outcomes that weren’t what I was hoping for!

What was unexpected when you started your business?

Everyone says how hard, time consuming and bank-draining starting a business is, and they are not wrong. But what most people fail to share is what goes on inside your head! I call this the “mind f**k”. Brash I know, but that is what I felt – sure I can learn new skills for my business but what really caught off guard was all the internal chatter in my head. The unconfident voice popping up saying “you sure you should be doing this?”, “what are you playing at, little old you can’t pull this business thing off etc.

When I was younger, confidence and self-worth didn’t come naturally to me – I was severely depressed, used to self-harm and suffered an eating disorder for 9 years. I have really had to learn to become confident, happy, and believe in me.

Having also gone through experiences that have really toughened me up and improved my resilience, I really thought I had a rock-solid mindset – so having these doubts and wobbles of self-belief and negative self-talk really took me surprise! This has just taught me even more about the power of the mindset and being confident. I understand how crucial it is for empowering to become you want, do what you believe and live a designed life!

What does it mean to live a designed life?

For me, having a designed life is about living with purpose, doing the things that make you happy/fulfilled and reaching your potential. Too many of us live a life we think we should live, or one that we think is expected of. But conventional doesn’t always mean right! A lot of people aren’t happy and feel stuck on the hamster’s wheel.

Personally, my designed life is about adding value to others, having fun and always learning. Those are my driving factors in life! If an action or activity doesn’t fall into those three, then I don’t want to do it!

These days I love to fill my designed life with serving others through my coaching business and my side business with Arbonne, useful content, training and workshops, travelling, being creative, keeping fit, trying new things, enjoying the small things in life etc.

What life lessons shaped you? How have they impacted on your life or business?

When I was younger, because of my depression, eating disorder and relationship issues with my mum, I lost so much time being sad, hating the world (and me) and crying myself to sleep. I would spend hours obsessing and crying, blaming others, and constantly anxious. I was in ‘victim mode’, telling myself “things would be better if…”

I used to be filled with regret and “my life would be OK if only…” but then it started to dawn on me… This is time I will never get back, BUT I can use it to make the rest of my life amazing.

My experiences over that decade or so massively impact me today, but in positive ways now rather than as low points or regrets. It has made me so happy and grateful for life as I can now appreciate how good it can be, and also that I am 100% in control. Whatever happens to me, I am not a victim unless I chose to be. . It made me want to reach my potential and with that, help others too. This is where my passion for coaching comes from. I KNOW we all have it within us to reach our potential, but we often hold ourselves back. My mission is to help others reach their potential, reach their version of success and live the life they want!

Sometimes when I am feeling down I look back on that period of my life with remorse but then I realise it has gotten me to where I am today and what I am doing in my business now!

What is your super power/ how do you use it

When I was younger, I was that annoying kid in school that teachers hated because I would always ask “why”. I questioned everything! I had this incessant need to know the why behind everything, rather than just the how or what.

Whilst this probably made parenting me difficult, it has made me an excellent coach! My ability to question things has allowed me to help my clients see things differently – we question their status quo and ‘personal stories’, so we can re-frame situations, they have more control and are empowered to make change.

This has also massively helped me see things from other people’s perspectives – a “what would I feel if I was in their shoes” mentality is a great superpower to have too!

About Alice…

Hi, I am Alice.

I empower people to reach their potential, creating long-lasting change and transformation.  I am a trained life and success coach. I offer private 1-2-1 coaching sessions, host events, blog and support corporate organisations wanting to improve workplace well-being and productivity with personal development training.

My passion to help others comes from the observation that life can be amazing but too many of us are not reaching our potential and living the life we want to live, whether that is in our careers, business, health, wellness, personal goals, etc. I know this from experience too as I was one of those people! Setbacks such as depression, an eating disorder and self-worth issues held me back for a long time.

So, I am on a mission to help people reach their potential and reach success whatever that looks like for them.

I specialise in empowering people in:

  • Overcoming their own limitations, fears and hurdles
  • Time management and productivity
  • Goal setting and planning
  • Forming positive habits
  • Improving confidence and self-belief
  • Developing a Success Mindset

The outcomes of working with me include gaining a sense of control and clarity, creating a new perspective and reframing issues, self-discovery, able to make decisions, getting unstuck and creating lifelong transformations. As a neuro-science geek I love helping clients understand what makes them tick and why their “brain is not their friend” as I always say. When I am not helping others, my passions are travelling, learning languages, baking, fitness, reading and art.

My name is Amanda Hard I am a local artist based out of Maine. I create empowering paintings of abstract women, to uplift and bring self-empowerment. My paintings are inspired by women, from all over the world, all walks of life! My paintings are for the young, old, weak, bold, regardless of their strengths, color, gender, and orientation. ALL women are my inspiration! Growing up as a female in this world has its challenges. I felt like there was always an image of who or what a “girl” should be. I always wanted to be able to relate and reflect on the struggles and beauty women hold within themselves. Women are so beautiful independent and articulate! I wanted to express a women’s life, journeys, passions, love, loss, failures, strengths, the ups the downs, careers, backgrounds! We are different colors, shapes, sizes, and so much more!

This was the inspiration that led me to start my “Girl Series”. I started creating paintings when I was going into college trying to figure out who I was as a woman. I wanted women to have a chance to relate and admire different parts of who they are, as I did while embracing who I was and I am as a woman. My mission is to give everyone a chance to escape through my paintings. I wanted to share as much as I could with everyone around me, so I started printing my images and “Girl Series” on Art prints, home decor, accessories, and apparel for women to incorporate their “Girl” in their day to day lifestyle. From beach towels, pillows, handbags, to make up purses, backpacks, coffee mugs, and so much more! So whichever lifestyle and type of girl you are, you are my inspiration!

What or Who inspired you to start your business?
My Brother. He’s always told me to put my art online, I out it off for so many years not listening to my big brother, but one day I LISTENED! I never knew or thought people would enjoy my artworks so much! He’s always supported me and pushed me to share my art with the world. I couldn’t do it without his knowledge, guidance, support and brotherly love.

How do you develop Key partnerships?
Stay in touch! Always keep communication open and prompt. Balance your partnerships out with partners that balance with you.

How did you get funded or what creative strategies did you use to execute on minimal cash flow?
Budgeting! It’s not easy! Especially being a girl! We want the latest fashion, makeup, and lifestyle trends, but when running a business you have to make a budget and only spend what’s necessary. Help fund your passion and business and in the end, your business will help fund you.

What habits helped make you successful?
Staying Constant. Keep going. Be persistent.

How do you distinguish yourself from your competitors?
I feel like everyone has their own individuality. I don’t look at others as competitors. I just look at them to learn, grow and build my own business!

What was your biggest mistake?
Not listening to my brother and starting earlier! (He’d be smiling reading this!)

How do you deal with failure and how do you learn from failures?
I don’t believe in the would Failure. If it’s not in the cards for me at that time then I keep going, keep moving forward and keep growing. If you stop to think you are failing it will distract you from prospering!

What was unexpected when you started your business?
The amount of love, support, and interest in my art! It’s a surreal feeling!

What did you learn?
So much! I’m constantly learning!

What would you have done differently?
Since starting my business I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I’ve learned from everything I’ve done. Whether it was beneficial or not I learned what to do and what not to do. Without making mistakes you can’t learn and grow from them.

How can you minimize the unknowns?
Through Experience

What advice would you give inspiring entrepreneurs?
Give it time!! People want instant success, but it takes time, patience and perseverance.

Stacey is an incredible woman, who despite the odds, started her journey of entrepreneurship after ending a relationship, going back to school, traveling the world, and sadly losing her younger cousin. The team at Designed Life are incredibly happy to share her story as a woman who found her voice, found herself, and decided to live her dreams.

Who inspired you to start your business AND your WHY:

I remember barely being a flickering spark of myself, after getting out of that relationship – at age 38! I felt so alone, and lost, after being torn apart by his parents because of my nationality and age, dating in secret, and after he eventually told me I’m easy to manipulate. I didn’t see the double life he was living. I wanted someone to stick up for me, to fight for me- blinded by wanting to prove myself and find my worth in him and his family. It all goes back to that time I was 12 years old, and that horrible grade; it was the first time I did poorly on a test. I was used to getting 90% or higher, my own disappointment was no match for how I thought my mom felt about it. I figured she must’ve thought I was stupid; unknowingly, I set out to spend the rest of my years proving I’m not stupid, proving I’m good enough, trying to live up to high standards. Quitting my job to travel around the world to 19 countries for a year, wasn’t enough to prove I’m enough. Nor was graduating from my second bachelor’s degree at the top of my class.

So there I was, picking up, and carefully placing my broken pieces back together. For two years, I rebuilt, reshaped, and relearned who I am. I delved into personal growth, took in all the teachings I could find, attended events, connected with like-minded people, took on a new position at work, and before you know it, I found me again. I realized I don’t need a relationship to give me worth, I don’t need to prove myself to anyone, I am capable, courageous, strong and imperfectly perfect the way I am. But I still longed for more in my life. I knew I had a calling to serve humanity, and didn’t know how or where to start.

It was there – in the dark conference room, in 2017, thousands of miles from home, on the first day, in the second row, right in front of the main speaker, and founder of the organization, in my glory, soaking in every word he said, where my answer came to me. My phone was vibrating off the hook, and when I finally picked it up, and read the words that almost stopped my heart, made me want to burst out crying, and closed in the room around me, I had an instant to make a choice, a choice I had to live with for the rest of my life. Would I stay or would I go? My younger cousin Casey back home had died, she had taken her own life.

It was that moment I decided to stay at the conference, to learn, grow, and become the best version of me! I saw my younger cousin struggle, I saw the darkness she lived in;
I thought, that could’ve been me! I remember those days I was diminished to nothing – I remember thinking I didn’t want to be here anymore. I decided at that moment I was going to go out there and shine my light, so others did not have to live in the darkness Casey lived in!
We don’t have to wait until we get into despair before we change our lives before we see the beauty and importance and possibility in life! That is when I made it my mission to work with women, to empower them, uplift them, help them build confidence, and instill limitless possibility! An empowered woman can change the world!

What mantra do you live by?
“If they can do it, I can do it”

 What mindsets made you successful?
a) I don’t allow myself to believe that anyone is above me, and that I can’t accomplish what others have accomplished. I don’t think there are superpowers that only a chosen few have. I believe we’re all equals and have the same ability to create our dream life, IF we are committed, dedicated, and work for it. I view the accomplishments of others as proof that it can be done!

b) Also, remembering, from my trek up Mount Kilimanjaro, that one baby step at a time will get me there! Slow and steady progress can move us up mountains!

Where does your passion come from?
Dancing, traveling, and people! My passion for traveling has taught me so much about people, perspective, what really matters in life, and seeing the big picture. The majority of this world lives without – are living in poverty, but have the most beautiful outlook on life. They have so little, but are so happy! I’ve learned so much from locals in developing countries I’ve traveled to. It’s so fulfilling and enriching for me to learn about people from all cultures, backgrounds, races, etc., what matters to them, what causes them to behave the way they do, and to understand them. My passion is learning about others, which is a vehicle for me to express and spread compassion and kindness.

What is your superpower/ how do you use it?
Asking really good questions! Most of my life I’ve been told I ask too many questions, and now I can see it as my superpower because I ask questions for a very specific reason – to gain understanding or to help others gain insight. When my clients tell me I’ve asked a question they’ve never been asked before, I take such delight, because, I know it will start the wheels turning, and bring them closer to a breakthrough. We all have the answers inside, we just need some help finding them – and that’s what a well thought out question does!

Mind mapping your way to achieve a strategic goal can do wonders. It’s a great way to map out all the crazy voices in your head. When I was in school for my MBA, we had to do some mind mapping and brainstorming.
I find mind mapping to be a quick way to get your ideas on paper. A feasibility study or business plan is great but the first thing I do when I get an idea or when I am strategizing a new path for an existing organization is to create a simple mind map.
A mind map is a tool that helps you think, gather information/knowledge, and create ideas. Its easy for your brain to easily capture and remember ideas through the use of  mind mapping.
Creating a mind map is easy in this case I created a simple one on a 5 by 7 postcard for by my organization.
The first thing is to place in the middle of that postcard exactly what you are thinking about it.

In this case, Designed Life is considered my central theme. Your topic or central theme can be a title, an idea, subject, a problem, a thought, a project, a business, or personal etc. The next is to create associations or topics, for designed life I had to come up with the list of outlets we currently use or plan to use to express our ideas and share our voice.
The next is the subject focus, since Designed Life is a platform I use to inspire others, mapping this out helps me not to lose focus on subjects we will focus on and not deviate from. I broke those down into topics that focuses on life, entrepreneurship, inspiration, stories, food, spirituality etc.
The next is the growth strategy how do we plan to grow all of the outlets mentioned.
Then to the methods we will use to send out our message which is still similar to the outlet.
The great thing about mind mapping is that you can literally make it out the way you want. It’s in your head.. there’s no specific formula to it. It can be as simple or as elaborate as you want.
Mind mapping is also a great visual think and structure to your ideas or goals.
As we begin to design the life or business we crave for, let’s work on mind mapping and brainstorming our strategies for the new year.

Another mind mapping you can do is more personal. I believe in the “start now philosophy” of not wasting time to get things done. I also share daily on my social media platform.
In the image below you would see my start now strategy which lays out my 3 months, 1 year, 5 years, and lifetime goals. With each of these you can create a second mind map for that specific goal.

In order of priority I focused on the 3 months goal of losing weight. The goal is to lose weight, with that I listed the steps that I would have to take to make this happen.
My goal is to lose 20 lbs in 3 months, but how will I lose 20 Ibs in 3 months? I will need to join a gym but how do I find a gym and when is my deadline to achieve this goal?
The map for my weight loss goal is all mapped out and ready to go. Doing this ensures that I can create an attainable goal and visual think of my personal weight loss journey.
I can also map out my plan for the year 2020. Then list each of those goals then map them out individually. It’s pretty simple, and can take less than 10 minutes. Make sure its measurable, make it personal based on where you are and what you have. Commit to achieving the goals, and make sure you stick to it. I’m rooting for you.
Try it and start now..

P.s. You can use tools like to create a fancy mind map. I didn’t really care much for it.

Dear Small Business Owner

Your venture isn’t a one hit wonder, it’s a building process to attain whatever strata you want in your sector.

In 2019 You made good plans, you strategised, the numbers looked good, you up-ed your networking game, you made noise where it mattered to be seen and gain relevance, you made efforts to develope yourself, you improved on your product or service and a lot of other things i might not know about.

There are no small victories. WELL DONE.?

Whether that worked out well or not, 2019 is almost out.
Reassess how you did. Don’t dwell so much on the things that were out of your control. But note the areas you know had inadequate attention, poor planning and bad decisions.

Now you gotta double that effort you gave in 2019. If you had a target to reach 10K people this year, double that in 2020. If you had set a goal to network with at least 10 different groups or people, double that.

Talk is cheap. Once you strategise and set those goals, hit the ground running in 2020.

I Believe in Prayer a lot. You should too every step of the way.

We will all Succeed.
